A Fluency Workbook for School-Age Children

Grades 1 – 5

By Holly Ridge, M.S. CCC-SLP and Beverly Ray, M.A

Exercises are organized into six themes that are interesting to children in Grades 1 to 5. These materials elicit responses ranging in difficulty across 6 levels:

  1. single words
  2. phrases
  3. sentences
  4. questions
  5. discovering
  6. telephoning

Each level has parallel exercises relating to six themes:

  1. Shopping for Groceries
  2. Going to a Restaurant
  3. School Interactions
  4. Sports
  5. Going Places
  6. Interactions with Family and Friends

This program also includes a booklet containing activities appropriate for culturally and linguistically diverse students. Furthermore, it has a special section dealing with maintaining and extending fluency. Because children experience these situations every day, the stimuli are practical and relevant, encouraging the greatest possible carryover of fluent speech. For each theme, you’ll find a reproducible picture that makes an ideal conversation starter.
