Using Topics and Details to See the Big Picture
Through the selections in Main Idea, students will have the opportunity to practice finding the main idea in various types of reading selections found both in and out of the classroom. These formats include advertisements, newspapers, letters, Internet Relay Chat, travel brochures, and more. Students are asked to respond to the readings in a variety of creative ways to demonstrate their ability to make use of their knowledge of topics, details, and main idea. Use these selections for independent practice or whole group instruction. Or, place the activity sheets in a center and reproduce the answer key for self-checking.
